Sometimes we all work hard towards getting approval. We obsess over what people might think; we are afraid of being judged. But the truth is, criticism is inevitable.
However, we should understand the difference between constructive criticism and destructive criticism. The difference lies in the way they are delivered and received.
Both of them are capable of dampening confidence and self-esteem. Yet, destructive criticism tends to cause an aggressive reaction while constructive criticism helps you learn to perform better.
How do you Handle Criticism Like A Pro?
Don’t take it personally
Consider criticism as feedback. Don’t get defensive; instead, analyze the intention of the messenger. See the complaint to be for the work, not for you who delivered it.
Focus on how to bring the change
Sift through any rude or negative comment and hear what is said. Ask questions to make sure you understand. Focus on how you can bring the changes.
Be calm
Never be rude. Appreciate the person for valuable feedback. Even if they are disrespectful, don’t make it an ego clash. Respond politely.
Stop over-analyzing
Rather than wasting your time obsessing over the way they deliver feedback, try and take action. Take substantial steps to move ahead and stop over-analyzing.
Say “Thank you.”
Criticism is beneficial for your personal growth. Be grateful for the inputs, smile, and say, “Thank you.” Also, criticism is just one person’s point of view; it does not hurt to smile and move on. It is not the end of the world!
