Burna Boy Is Here Again, Twice As Tall

Nigerian Afrobeats Megastar, Burna Boy, has just dropped his highly anticipated album “Twice As Tall.” The fresh 15-track album is a follow up to his widely celebrated 2019 album “African Giant”

With over 5 million streams in its first 30 minutes on Audiomack, the airplay on this album is going off the charts! So, is The African Giant twice as tall as the last time we saw him? Here’s what we think!

The Producers

Burna boy locked global attention on this working with American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer, Sean “Diddy” Combs. 

Eleven out of the fifteen songs were produced by Nigerian producers, eight from the Spaceship Collective. Other producers include LeriQ, Telz, P2J, Rexxie, Mike Dean, Timbaland, Skread, and Jae5.

‘Alarm clock,’ the album’s second track is co-produced by Diddy and P2J. It is really impressive to see producers from far and wide bringing their respective unique talents to this project.

The Features

“Twice As Tall” features music acts such as Senegalese artist Youssou N’Dour, O.G. trio Naughty By Nature, Kenyan afro-pop band Sauti Sol, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and U.K. rapper Stormzy.

The Sounds

‘Twice as Tall’ is a beautiful melange of sounds. With many of the songs recorded in Lagos, this album does not seem to apologize. At a point, the song is interspersed with gunshots and sirens that speaks to the throb of the Nigerian youth.

For every song, Burna Boy infuses an identity of his “Africanness.” You would hear common colloquialisms relatable to the African continent like “Wetin dey sup”, and “Ponmo”.

The 15 songs including “Wonderful” take us through Burna’s successes, vulnerabilities while encouraging perseverance against all odds.

On his Instagram page, the Grammy-nominated, Afro-fusion singer recognized those who contributed to the project.

“The album is a journey through a bunch of emotions and energies at different points in time. It has now morphed into something bigger than me. It serves as a bridge for mankind to show that we’re all different but still very much the same.”

In all, we think the album carries a unifying sense of pan-African idealism. One meaning that would keep occurring to you as you listen is that “We were all Africans before we were anything else.”

It is indeed commendable that Burna always endeavors to use his music to reach deeply into people connecting them to events in his and our home continent, Africa.
