Sweatshirts and hoodies have a lot in common mostly because they are usually made of the same material and worn by all ages and sexes.
A sweatshirt is a long-sleeved pullover that covers the upper body and arms, just like a hoodie. The apparent difference is the hood a hoodie has.

Characteristics of hoodies and sweatshirts
Material: When it comes to material, there is no real distinction between the sweatshirt and the hoodie. The fabrics used are usually the same – could be cotton, plastic, etc. – depends on the manufacturer.
Collar: A sweatshirt can be worn with other clothing like a shirt or T-shirt. The same is not the case with a hoodie; at least not with something that is supposed to be visible.
Details: A sweatshirt looks simpler. It usually has no buttons or zippers. A hoodie, besides the hood, has cords to tighten it. Some also have a zipper if you want to wear it open.
Sweatshirt vs. Hoodie: When to choose which
Winter and cold: Both sweatshirts and hoodies work perfectly as heat insulation on cold days. The hood, however, gives an added protection to keep the head warm when you don’t have a beanie. Therefore a hoodie is undoubtedly preferable in cold conditions.
Formal events: Say you are invited to dinner by your parents-in-law or have an official meeting, a sweatshirt bests the hoodie. You can even style it up a little by wearing a shirt underneath. A hoodie just doesn’t fit – it’s not really for formal events.
Casual events: Both hoodies and sweatshirts work well for casual events. But a hoodie can offer an extra stylish advantage. A well-fitting T-shirt under a hoodie with a bomber or leather jacket can add extra spice.
In all, hoodies and sweatshirts have benefits and disadvantages depending on the occasion and your taste too, of course.
