We first met Niniola as the third runner-up in the sixth season of music talent TV reality show, Project Fame West Africa in 2013. Four years later, she broke the internet with her hit song ‘Maradona,’ a banging chart topper. Maradona was later sampled in Beyonce’s The Gift album in 2019, as her fame grew.

Her debut album, This Is Me, was an official introduction to her audience. With hit tracks like Saro, Rora, Sicker and Magun. Niniola shines in a genre she tags, ‘Afro-house.’ She has worked with the likes of Sarz the ace producer, with whom she has recorded many successful collaborations.

‘Colours and Sounds’ is Niniola’s sophomore album and it consists of fifteen tracks. Here, she explores various themes but concepts on relationships, ‘situationships’ and sex are dominant. She opens with ‘Night & Day‘ which features Nonso Amadi, then moves swiftly to ‘Innocent‘ and ‘So Serious.‘ In all of these, you may call me biased but ‘Addiction’ is truly the star of the album. She does everything right in this track, from her vocals to the lyrics and the general production.I bet even Niniola agrees as she ends the album with an extended version of the song.

An album that lives up to its name.

In this latest body of work, Niniola lets us experience an array of emotions, sometimes represented by colours, while reminding us of why she is Queen of Afro-house. We are definitely here for Niniola’s continuous success especially in an industry where women are few and far between. It’s beautiful to see, really.

She features top-tier acts like Nonso Amadi, Kenyan afro-pop band, Sauti Sol, South African singer and poet, Busiswa (a second-time collaborator), American musician and producer, Timbaland, British DJ and singer, Afro B, and musician and instrumentalist, Femi Kuti. The tracks are produced by the legendary Sarz, Kel P, Shuffle Muzik, Nonso Amadi, Teflonzincfence and Timbaland.

In ‘Colours and Sounds’, we experience  back to back bangers that make yoiu wish you the clubs would reopen. Big ups to Niniola on this one.
