King Sunny Ade

King Sunny Ade (real name: Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter whose music genres include Juju and African Popular music. His first album, Juju Music, was released in 1982. Peaking at #111 on Billboard’s ‘Pop Albums’ chart, this project was a commercial success. Till date, ‘Ja Funmi,’ a single off the album, continues to enjoy massive airplay at events by people of various ethnicities all over the world.

When I was young, my grandmother used to keep tons of cassettes and a radio on her small drawer. It was a variety of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Victor Olaiya and many others. Then, on Saturdays, she would play each cassette and dance until it all ended. These are moments that will forever be etched in my memory. And, because of her, King Sunny Adé will always signify an embracing of youth, unbridled joy and laughter.

At least three in every ten Nigerians will tell you that they grew up listening to KSA. They will also tell you about his music makes them feel, pure classics that are also memories of their childhood experiences.
