Lessons For A Smart Money Woman, With Love From Arese Ugwu

There is so much to learn from Arese Ugwu’s bestseller, The Smart Money Woman, which has now been adapted for TV.

The Smart Money Woman is a book by Arese Ugwu, founder of Smart Money Africa. It follows the lifestyles of middle-class and middle-aged women in Nigeria’s commercial centre, Lagos. The book was published in 2016 and four years later, it has made it to our screens as a series.

The 13-episode TV series details an African girl’s journey to financial freedom. It is the story of Zuri, a Lagos ‘big’ girl, whose lavish lifestyle is cut short due to spendthrift ways. Together with friends Tami, Lara, Adesuwa, and Ladun, these women navigate life and its many struggles, from finances to love.

The first thing that struck me about The Smart Money Woman TV series is its stellar cast of talented Nollywood Actors. Starring Osas Ighodaro, Inidima Okojie, Toni Tones, Ebenezer Eno and Kemi Lala Akindoju, among others, this one is a must-watch. Ahead of its premiere on 23rd September 2020, the scriptwriter Jola Ayeye had this to say:

Smart Money Woman is about how love, relationships and money collide. So you guys can expect to laugh, cry, feel sad and be exasperated by the characters and their shenanigans. You can expect to see themselves and their friends –and enemies– in the individual stories. I really, really hope people enjoy the series, it’s going to be a fun 13 weeks.

Five episodes in and it is clear that The Smart Money Woman is amplifying the plot in the most incredible ways, through the vibrant lives of women existing in a middle-class society. It tackles money (having too much or too little of it), career, relationships, and all the ways the average African woman can achieve financial freedom after learning valuable life lessons.
