The United Kingdom October 2020 remembering the important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is time to celebrate the black race and history without apology and to speak up on pressing issues affecting the black community in the United Kingdom. The people of African and Caribbean communities have been shaping Britain’s history and helping to make it a better place and it is with this in mind that Blacks in the UK are celebrating the Black History Month.
The Black History Month celebration originated from the United States and can be attributed to historian Carter G. Woodson who thought recognition and importance of the black history was important to the Black communities.
This year’s celebration in the UK is taking inspiration from the Black Lives Matter movement, sparking conversations and calls to action all over the world about racial discrimination and to raise awareness of oppression in black communities.
To celebrate the Black History Month this year, Black women in the UK launched an Instagram Takeover for the #sharethemicuk campaign which is aimed at amplifying the voices of women. The campaign which launched on the 1st of October, 2020, has black women taking over the Instagram accounts of prominent women like Victoria Beckham, Emma Dabiri, Yomi Adegoke, Laura Whitmore, Kourtney Kardashian for a day to magnify the stories of black women around the world.
Black History Month takes the whole month October as it is a month-long celebration and organizations like Writing on the Wall, Creative Organizations of Liverpool and other organizations have come together to organize a program of activities across Liverpool to celebrate the month.
