5 ‘New’ Nigerian Music Acts We Can’t Get Enough Of!

Nigerian music is popular for a lot of things, and top of the list is Afrobeats at its finest! As you would expect, new acts pop up every day and either fade away or steal our hearts forever. So, Inspired by TGIF, here are the top 5 new (and not so new) acts that we can’t get enough of right now!

1. Omah Lay

Face of Africa’s Rising’s Apple Music playlist, Omah Lay is the fastest rising artiste right now. He rose to fame when his single, Bad Influence, started making rounds and impressions on the Nigerian audience. He released an EP, Get Layd, immediately after and the success of this work is immense. One of the tracks on the album, ‘Lo Lo’ is currently enjoying massive airplay. Newsflash: Omah Lay has swept us off our feet and we can already tell he is not going anywhere.

2. Fireboy DML

Signed to YBNL, Fireboy rose to fame when he released his single “Jealous” which received widespread fan love and currently has 9.8 million views on YouTube. Shortly after, he released another single, “What If I Say,” which also topped music charts for months. Riding on the successes of these singles, he released his debut album “Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps” on 29th November 2019. He explores love in ‘Need You’, ‘Like I Do’ and ‘Feel,’ the need to loosen up and enjoy life in ‘Energy,’ ‘Scatter’ and ‘High On Life,’ and in the last track, ‘Wait & See,’ he tells us how he rose through doubt, obstacles and made sacrifices to get to the top. His latest singles, ‘New York City Girl’ and ‘Eli’ show that he is not slowing down.

3. Rema

In 2018, 18-year-old Rema joined the Nigerian music scene with the trap genre. You can say that he gave us something we didn’t know we needed, and this refreshing sound was welcomed with a fast-growing cult following. In 2019, he won the Headies award for Next Rated act. He also made the list on former American President Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist with his single ‘Iron Man,’ He recently released an album, Rema Compilations, which features hit songs like ‘ ‘Corny,’ ‘Alien’ and ‘Ginger Me.

4. Joeboy

Joeboy

Joeboy stole our hearts from the moment he gave us ‘Baby.’  Garnering 33 million views on its visualiser and 8 million views on its official video on YouTube, this single follows a story with a series of visualizers featuring songs tracks about love and heartbreak like  ‘Beginning,’ ‘Don’t Call Me Back,’ and ‘All For You.’

5. Terri

Latest signee to Nigerian superstar WizKid’s record label ‘Star Boy Entertainment,’ Terri was first spotted in WizKid’s ‘Soco’ alongside Ceeza Milli and ‘Spotless’ in 2018. After that, he released a single ‘On Me’ in 2019. However, the current rave is his ‘Afro Series’ which features crowd-pleasers like ‘Ojoro’ and ‘Balance.’ For Terri, it seems, it’s all about the club hits.
